MIFA Council & Committee Nomination Process
Council Positions
The MIFA Forensic Council, the governing body of the organization, includes at-large members. A self-nomination procedure identifies interested candidates who are able to make the necessary time commitment to a Forensic Council position and secure administrative approval of the candidacy.
It is the responsibility of the Forensic Council to develop rules and regulations to govern interscholastic speech activities in Michigan. In most areas, standing committees or special committees exist to advise the Forensic Council concerning procedures for the governance of specific activities. The Forensic Council meets approximately five times annually. The normal operation of the association is facilitated by an Executive Director selected by the Forensic Council.
The Forensic Council conducts an annual statewide election for two of the four at-large members to the governing body of the organization. The At-Large position is a two-year term.
Nominations for the Forensic Council for 2016-2018 were accepted through May 22, 2016.
Committee Positions
Each of the nine regions (based on geographic areas) in Michigan has one representative on each of the MIFA Committees -- Debate, Individual Events, Theatre, and Middle Level. The responsibility of committee members is to consider, in an advisory capacity, the rules and regulations for the specific MIFA activities. Material on the different events in Speech Activities generally reflects the work of the Committees. Members of the Committees also help facilitate various tournaments, workshops and meetings of directors, as appropriate. The chair of each Committee is a voting member of the MIFA Forensic Council.
Committee members are expected to:
> participate in 4-5 online meetings a year
> assist in the planning and administration of regional and state final tournaments
> meet in person at least twice a year
> recommend appropriate revisions to Speech Activities for consideration by Forensic Council
Elected committee positions are for a two-year term of office. Terms begin July 1 and span two complete academic years. Positions unfilled by the nomination/election process will be appointed by Council at the August. Appointed committee positions are for a one-year term of office.
Odd-numbered regions will elect representatives in odd years. Even numbered regions will elect representatives in even years. In addition to the following expiring appointments: Debate (Regions I, III, VII, and IX) Individual Events (I, V, and IX) Theatre (V and IX).
A director may nominate any school staff member or paraprofessional with a known involvement in the specific activities or may self-nominate. To be considered for election, the nominee must be an active coach within the particular geographic region of the nominator.
Nominations for the Committees were accepted through May 22, 2016.
