Legislative Debate State Championship Tournament

Preliminary and final results are up on the web before the last contestant has left the awards ceremony! See VARTABLDfinal.pdf and NovLDTab1112final.pdf on the list below.

The MIFA Legislative Debate State Championships will be held at Calvin College on January 14, 2012. Look forward to excellent competition at both the Novice and Varsity levels.

Bills are required by December 13 and should be sent directly to mifa@themifa.org. (in MS Word format, please) No additional bills will be accepted after this date.

We need to have your registration submitted by December 24, 2011. Some modifications in registration can take place until December 31 without penalty. Drop fees of $10 go into effect on January 9 and are raised to $20 on January 13 and incur forfeiture of the original registration fee. Drops on tournament day are subject to a $40 fee. This is a change from last year.

The fee schedule is as follows: $35 per school. That covers the first student. $7 per student after one. Not more than 10 students in Varsity and not more than 10 students in Novice.

Lunch will be available for purchase for students and a complimentary lunch will be provided for coaches, judges and tournament personnel.

Hired judges may be available to be hired by MIFA at $95 a judge. There are not many available. First come, first served.

Registration will be conducted on-line. http://legdebate.hirelesmana.com/login.php
For those of you who have not used this system before, it's not too hard. Go to the above URL. On the bottom rectangle on the right side, click on Create a new school account and follow the directions. Register for the Legislative Debate State Tournament 2012. When it is time to enter students, be sure to register them by name in Varsity Leg Debate or Novice Leg Debate (obviously not in those other IE categories). Judge(s) should be eligible to judge both so click on the BOTH radio button. Save. Go to your registraton sheet and print it off as an invoice.

You can bring a check on the day of the tournament or you can pay by credit card or PayPal right on themifa.org. To pay online, determine what your fees are, click Catalog tab above on this page. Select Tournament Fees. Then State Legislative Debate Tournament Fees and follow the directions. Or click here.

A reminder on eligibility: Varsity debaters must have become eligible for this tournament by having competed in at least three interscholastic Legislative Debates in the 2011-2012 academic year. The Novice Division is open enrollment.

If you plan to house your students overnight the night before the tournament, there are a number of hotels nearby. Calvin College has secured an excellent rate at the Prince Conference Center. Website http://www.calvin.edu/prince/ You should call them and identify yourself as staying for the MIFA event and they will give you a great price.

Usefull information is in the downloads below.

NOTE ON THE DOCKET: Bills are due to mifa@themifa.org not later than 12/10/2011. They will be distributed to the committee and returned to MIFA for distribution. If everything goes according to plan, bills may be available before break. If not, bills will be distributed before January 4, 2012.

The Schedule is accurate now. This is the schedule we will adhere to on tournament day. Clearly announcement of those advancing to the Super Session may not happen exactly at 2:30 but ASAP. The one labled LegDebDetailSched has some extra specifics in it.

The qualification of your school for this tournament shows real dedication to our newest MIFA event.
