Middle Level Individual Events Minimize

Individual Events activities highlight a variety of public speaking and oral interpretation events. Middle Level tournaments provide an opportunity for an individual to participate in one of eleven events. Middle schools and junior high schools participate in Individual Events at Fall and Spring tournaments. Middle Level Rules can be downloaded from this page.

RULES:  Middle Level Speech Activities updated for 09/10

CONTINUING FOR 2009-2010: "At the discretion of the tournament director, one sixth grade only event in public address and one in interpretation may be added at each tournament and original interpretation may be added at the spring tournament only."

The sixth grade events for the Fall Tournament again will be impromptu speaking and storytelling. Sixth graders may enter any of the events; however, the two events that are exclusive for sixth grade students will only include contestants in that grade.  A sixth grade student could enter the "open" impromptu or storytelling event (or any other event that was of interest to the contestant).

With the hope of leaving no student entering the extemporaneous or impromptu events "speechless," sets of questions should offer enough variety that all contestants are likely to  be able to formulate a speech about at least one topic selected during their draw.  At the same time, questions should be relevant to the age group (11-14) and should focus on how issues relate to their lives and/or the Core Democratic Values.

The suggested topics for Middle School Extemporaneous Speaking are:

  • Round I:  Policies of the current administration (or newly elected administration in election years).  Questions will be on domestic policy issues only and will attempt to relate issues to the lives of students and/or the Core Democratic Values.
  • Round II:  General questions on domestic policy issues.  Questions will be on domestic policy issues only and will attempt to relate issues to the lives of students and/or the Core Democratic Values.
  • Round III:  A roughly equal mixture of questions from Rounds I and II.

The suggested topics for Middle School Impromptu Speaking are:

  • Round I:  Education and Community Interests
  • Round II:  Family and Consumer Issues
  • Round III:  News and Entertainment
